If You Play Poker Tomorrow, Your Grandchild Might Win The Superbowl
the second Tuesday of every month it is happening
Good Day to all the Degenerate Gambler Shareholders of KmikeyM!
⬇️ Scroll down for the details, but we’re playing poker tomorrow at 7pm pacific. ⬇️
I hope everyone made money on the weird prop bets about Taylor Swift yesterday. Here are some of the ones I saw:
Will Taylor Swift be shown during the national anthem? (no)
Will Taylor Swift get a shout out during the half time show (no)
What’s Higher, Kelce Receptions or Swift Live Shots? (swift)
Half Taylor Swift Shown More (second)
Times Taylor Swift Shown During Live Broadcast (O/U 5.5) (over)
Primary Color of Taylor Swift’s Top at Super Bowl (black)
And there were so many more! I love it. The more weird bets people make about things that aren’t football then the more random betting becomes just a normal everyday aspect of interacting with the world. And that feels so dystopian, inevitable, and fun.
As the big game ended yesterday and everyone was celebrating I wondered, as I always do when I watch sports, what industry allowed someone to become rich enough to buy a sports team? Usually the answer is oil, tech, or finance. And the answer for the KC Chiefs is kind of oil, but also it could be argued it was POKER!
The owner of the Kansas City Chiefs is Clark ‘Chad’ Hunt1. Clark is the grandson of oil tycoon H.L. Hunt. But Clark owns the Chiefs because his Daddy owned them2, and his Daddy owned the Chiefs because he played football in college in the 50’s and was his Daddy, H.L. Hunt, was super rich.
So Grand Daddy made the money, Daddy bought the team, and Chad won the Super Bowl yesterday. So how did H.L. Hunt make his money? Well, on the one hand, he was a texas oilman, but before that (and probably his whole life) he was a truly degenerate gambler, and the story is that he turned his last $100 into $100,000 and bought oil properties:
Hunt was homeschooled. He did not go to elementary school or to high school. Later, he said that education is an obstacle to making money. As a teenager, Hunt traveled to different places before he settled in Arkansas, where he was running a cotton plantation by 1912. He had a reputation as a math prodigy and was a gambler. Hunt is reported in internal FBI memoranda to have run prostitution activities in Arkansas and, later in the 1950s, a private horse racing and gambling bookmaking operation from his office in Dallas.
Anyway, H.L. Hunt got rich, had fifteen kids (is this Nick’s inspiration?), and one of his kids got obsessed with the business of football and gave the Chiefs to his son. So there you have it. Poker made it all possible. And just think, we’re playing poker TOMORROW!

🏛 The Special Rules
As a reminder, we play with special rules meant to incentivize certain (bad) behaviors. Some of these rules have significant consequences!
Mean Girls: Players on the official Zoom call during the game may collude against players who are not on the official Zoom call during the game, provided that the absence is not a temporary one due to technical issues.
The 2-7 Bonus: If you make it to a showdown with 2-7 you get a free share! But it only counts when there are five or more people at the table. (so if we are split up at the beginning, you might be out of luck until the tables merge). Be sure to announce this as it can happen quick and someone else needs to witness it. If you win in a show down with 2-7 you get five shares.
The Hope Coin Slayer: Whoever takes out the holder of the Hope Coin (Chris) gets 1 share.
The Final Countdown: If seven deuce is played as the final hand of the tournament the player will be given two shares, and if a player wins the tournament with seven deuce they will receive seven shares.
Cain + Abel: If Mike’s brother Gene is playing (username: webvee) there is a bonus of one share to whoever knocks him out.
Kevin Deuce: If you are the first person of the night to beat someone at showdown with unsuited K2 and yell “Kevin Deuce!” Beau will give you a share.
anyone who inherits enough money to own a team, or is given an NFL team by their Daddy is a “chad”
Clark’s Daddy loved football and spent a lot of H.L. Hunt’s money on getting into it.
