Last month we talked about the government seizing ownership of a casino. But that wasn’t just a weird thing that happened once in the coke-fueled 80s. It’s a long term trend where the US now seizes more value than is stolen.
At a certain point in 2014 it was more profitable for the first time to be in the business of government forfeiture than burglary. Is this a compelling case for the economic incentives created by the forfeiture laws? Are those compelled to participate in the forceful acquisition of property now finding it is better to be a cop than a robber?
I think in the classic game of Cops and Robbers it’s cooler to be a robber, but the in the real world maybe now.
