Hello Gamblers,
I was born on May 17th, 1977 in Fairbanks, Alaska. I didn’t gamble much until I was in High School where I learned to play when I was on the swim team. Our coach was very religious, and didn’t approve of gambling, so we weren’t allowed to play for money. Someone, probably Josh or Gene, came up with “rat nipples.”
So if Coach found us playing cards on the back of the bus or up in the stands during a meet the answer to “Are you playing for money?” was always, “No, we’re playing for rat nipples.” And while this seems but the thinnest and most ridiculous of cover stories, it worked and we’d be left to play.
Of course all of Alaska was essentially a gamble. The US purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million. Detractors referred to it as “Seward’s Folly” and assumed it was a giant worthless freezing expanse (to be fair, sort of true) they called a “polar bear garden.” The impression changed some 30 years later during the great Klondike Gold Rush, where an estimated 100,000+ prospectors migrated to the Klondike region of the Yukon in Canada, most of which travelled through Southeast Alaska.
So come celebrate “Michael’s Folly” and play poker with us next Tuesday on May 14th. (It’s also Chris’ birthday this month! And Dwayne Johnson, and Catherine II Empress of Russia.)

🏛 The Special Rules
As a reminder, we play with special rules meant to incentivize certain behavior. Some of these rules have significant consequences!
Mean Girls: Players on the official Zoom call during the game may collude against players who are not on the official Zoom call during the game, provided that the absence is not a temporary one due to technical issues.
The 2-7 Bonus: If you make it to a showdown with 2-7 you get a free share! But it only counts when there are five or more people at the table. (so if we are split up at the beginning, you might be out of luck until the tables merge). Be sure to announce this as it can happen quick and someone else needs to witness it. If you win in a show down with 2-7 you get five shares.
The Hope Coin Slayer: Whoever takes out the holder of the Hope Coin (Chris) gets 1 share.
The Final Countdown: If seven deuce is played as the final hand of the tournament the player will be given two shares, and if a player wins the tournament with seven deuce they will receive seven shares.
Cain + Abel: If Mike’s brother Gene is playing (username: webvee) there is a bonus of one share to whoever knocks him out.
Kevin Deuce: If you are the first person of the night to beat someone at showdown with unsuited K2 and yell “Kevin Deuce!” Beau will give you a share.
