A few fun articles we can learn from that I read recently. In a Fast Company article titled What counting cards at blackjack can teach you about VC investing the founding partner of One Way Ventures compares gambling to investing in fledgling companies. As one of the members of the famous MIT blackjack teams, he says the two endeavors share the following attributes:
Data-Driven, Probabilistic Decision-Making Is Key
Must Avoid Emotional Decision-Making and Stick to the Long-Term Strategy
VCs Have to Embrace Ambitious Founders and the Pursuit of the “Impossible”
He says:
I didn’t stay very long in the world of flashing casino lights. We made a few million playing blackjack, but we played a zero-sum game like Wall Street traders do, without actually creating any value for anyone. It’s infinitely more gratifying to invest in and mentor companies whose customers actually thank you.
And I have to wonder if that is actually true. Because I think the thrill of making money from nothing is way more compelling than working really, really hard for long hours to solve a difficult problem in a competitive environment where you always feel under resourced. But maybe that is just my inner problem gambler speaking?

Weird that they black out that photo of everyone at the beginning of this doc since it’s easy to find the pic online:
Maybe just an editorial choice to make things seem more interesting? Maybe I should try that…
Oh yeah… that’s great!
