Six players. $50 buy-in. 132 hands. Two hours of fast-paced action, house politics, and the rise of a Zoom absentee turned champion.
The April tournament delivered a full narrative arc: early drama, strategic pivots, and a late-game comeback that defined the night.
We started with a bit of controversy — both Nick and Matt were off Zoom at the start, activating the infamous “Mean Girl” house rule. While Matt escaped the table’s coordination, Nick found himself under fire of a little gossip. Even so, he held firm.
Meanwhile, Mike was slowly bleeding chips, finding himself short-stacked and forced to fire the night’s only rebuy. But that reset seemed to ignite something: armed with fresh chips and inspired by Jeffery Katzenberg’s Quibi ethos (“Bet Big / Fold Fast”), Mike launched into an aggressive, high-risk campaign. He surged to the chip lead, while Amy kept close behind with steady, disciplined play.
Nick, sitting at about half the stack size of the leaders, played it cool and waited for his moment. When Mike pressed too hard, Nick capitalized perfectly, taking him out in a decisive hand. Mike’s bold strategy, like Quibi itself, burned bright — and fast.
With Mike out, Nick carried a monster stack into heads-up play against Amy. She fought hard, landing clean shots and clawing back pots, at one point even inspiring Nick to show up on the Zoom. But his cushion of chips allowed him to absorb the swings. After a series of exchanges, Nick closed it out for the win.
As a side note for table trivia: across 132 hands, the coveted 7-2 bonus went unclaimed. No one dared take the plunge with poker’s worst starting hand. Maybe next time.
Final standings:
🥇 1st – Nick
🥈 2nd – Amy
🫧 – Mike (rebuy)
4th – J.
5th – Beau
6th – Matt
Congrats to Nick — from off-camera to on top of the leaderboard. Until next month!
🪙 Hope Coin Update
The legend of the Hope Coin continues…
Our commemorative coin, imbued with power and luck, remains in the possession of Matt, who has held it since the start of the year. The Hope Coin only changes hands when someone eliminates its holder three times — a rare and difficult feat. Those who succeed earn the honored title of Hope Slayer.
The Hall of Hope Slayers so far this year has four names:
January: Chris
February: Will
March: Nick
April: Mike
Will May bring a new Hope Slayer? Or will an existing Slayer be one step closer to claiming the prize? Stay tuned…
