Hello Gamblers,
Please save the date for next Tuesday as we have the monthly shareholder poker tournament! We broke into two tables last month, so there is a lot of money to win.
1979 - John Wayne dies
1959 - Christopher Cockerell first presents the hovercraft
1910 - Jacques Cousteau is born
1817 - The first predecessor of the bicycle is demonstrated
What does any of this have to do with poker (other than help remind you to show up next week)? Well…
John Wayne
For $99 you can buy a 300 piece John Wayne poker set. He played a lot of poker in his movies.
Hovercraft
The Queensland Racing and Betting Act of 1980 includes hovercraft racing as a definition of “vessel.” It’s difficult to find a place to make those bets, but check out the races:
Jacques Cousteau
While he was a risk-taker, he was not a gambler. Probably because he watched his uncle lose everything in Monaco. According to My Father, the Captain: My Life With Jacques Cousteau by Jean-Michel Cousteau:
Bicycles
The Bicycle Playing Cards have been manufactured since 1885. There is a great website of all the designs of the old cards at bicyclecards.org, and there are some auctions on eBay.
There just isn’t much in this world where you can’t draw a connection to gambling because we are all making bets all the time.
The National Council on Problem Gambling (personally I like to think of it as “opportunity” gambling) claims that about 85% of U.S. adults have gambled at least once in their lives, with 60% having gambled within the past year.
And another bicycle connection, the executive director of the NCPG is Keith Whyte who is an avid cyclist who boasts about cycling more than 3,000 miles a year, but honestly that isn’t that much compared to Kathryn.
See you next week.
